19thC Scandinavian Decorative Swedish Dalarna Folk Art Painted Occasional Chair

About

Still wearing its original, and beautifully worn multicolored polychrome paint, this rare Swedish chair epitomises the Folk Art style that blossomed in Sweden during the 18th and 19th century. This particular example has been well worn, and has obviously been a treasured piece, as for its age it is in wonderful condition. A combination of carving, applied decoration in the form of birds and flowers and its original hand painted canvas seat held by brass studs, makes this a rare decorative piece. The canvas seat is slightly torn on the front edge, and there is a crack in the left hand front leg and evidence of an old repair, although nothing to suggest that this affects its structural integrity as the chair is very solid and usable. The canvas seat is supported with hessian and padded with (now flattened) horsehair.
