Paint-Decorated New England Dressing Table in Chrome Yellow, 1820-1830

About

NEW ENGLAND DRESSING TABLE IN ORIGINAL PAINT WITH A CHROME YELLOW GROUND & VINEGAR DECORATION: This beautiful, Northern New England, paint-decorated dressing table has a chrome yellow background and a beautifully scrolled backsplash with sponged, vinegar-painted decoration. The drawers in the top register complement the splash in color, but the style of the decoration instead mimics crotch-grained mahogany. There is striped trim in black and Windsor green and there are gold floral rosettes just above the centre of each front leg. The leaf decoration around and below the brass Sheraton knob is interesting and whimsical. Made circa 1820-1830, the style is country Sheraton and the round legs terminate with in a smooth, bulbous turning. The proportions, the paint surface and condition are all excellent for the period. Provenance: Exhibited for three years in the green design home of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
