This is an Antique pine seaman's chest with original rope handles. The grooved plinth base was to allow drainage of the seawater aboard ship. The inward angulation of the sides of the chest was to create better stability on deck. Later painted decoration includes the name of James Burdett-a famous Nantucket whaler as well as harpoons used around this time period. The blue exterior gives a lovely aged appearance to this antique chest.
