About the Item
A remarkable early 20th-century oil painting by Austrian artist Alwin Arnegger, portraying two elderly Jewish rabbis in quiet repose within a synagogue interior. The work, entitled Zwei Rastende Rabbiner (“Two Resting Rabbis”), captures with sensitivity both the dignity and humanity of its subjects.
The composition shows the two rabbis seated together on a single perpendicular bench. The rabbi in the foreground leans wearily forward, his head resting gently on his hand. In front of him, on a small tan-colored table, lie several stacked closed seforim (holy books), underscoring his life immersed in learning. Behind him sits another rabbi, his posture upright yet relaxed. A cane rests between his knees, while in his left hand he clutches an open snuff box, and with his right hand he lifts a pinch of snuff toward his nose, his expression calm and composed.
The interior details enrich the scene: the grey stone floor, the muted teal-blue walls, and the window that casts natural daylight into the synagogue. Through the window, the faint outline of a neighboring building can be discerned, placing the scene within a living townscape. In the background, a recessed wooden bookcase further emphasizes the scholarly environment. The stark black attire of the rabbis, including their black hats and long coats, contrasts dramatically with the softer tones of the surroundings, focusing the viewer’s attention on their presence and gestures.
The palette balances the cool greys and blues of the architecture with the warmth of the rabbis’ human expressions. The play of light softens the interior, illuminating the central figures while hinting at the vibrant life outside. The scene conveys both serenity and the continuity of Jewish tradition within its modest yet enduring spaces.
Alwin Arnegger (1883–1916) was an Austrian Impressionist and Modern painter, born in Vorarlberg. He studied philosophy in Vienna and Prague, but his artistic passion led him to painting, where he focused primarily on portraits and landscapes. His works often depicted the environs of Vorarlberg and Munich, blending realism with impressionistic sensitivity. Though his career was tragically cut short by his early passing, Arnegger left behind a legacy of deeply human portrayals, capturing both the physical likeness and inner spirit of his subjects.

A Bronze Figurine of Three Jewish Men in Conversation, Austria late 19th Century
Located in New York, NY
A Small bronze figurine of two Jewish men with several stereotypical physical features commonly attributed to Jewish men: large noses, sidelocks, and beards. They are wearing caftans (kaftans) belted by wide sashes at the waist.
A caftan is a long-sleeved, ankle-length coat with an open-cut at the front. Many Eastern Polish and Western Russian Jews began wearing caftans fastened with wide, oriental-style sashes in the late medieval period. The garb later spread to Central Europe, but in place of the sash, a cord was used to close the front of the garment instead. These garments were often worn by peddlers and itinerant vendors who traveled the countryside and sold goods to the public.
However, old prejudices stemming from the economic and professional restrictions placed on early European Jews, along with Christians’ disdain for the professions Jews were allowed to practice, formed an antisemitic stereotype of the greedy Jew who exploited Gentiles.
This canard was often visually depicted as a Jewish peddler...
