"An American Street Scene" Folk Art Painting by R.V. DeVine, 1943

About the Item

A wonderful American naive oil painting on canvas. The United States was already two years into WWII. Rationing and personal hardship was an everyday occurrence. Families were unsure of the well being of sons overseas. A true patriotism manifests in times of war as seen in the works of Norman Rockwell and the covers of The Saturday Evening Post and Colliers. This piece depicts some old salt box type homes and a church at the end of an old tree lined dirt road. The light seems to filter through the trees and dots the road with sun filled patches. Signed lower right, R.V. DeVine, 1943 and also signed and titled on the wood stretcher in pencil, An American Street Scene. Signed on reverse canvas. Good overall condition with no visible rips, tears, punctures or restorations to the canvas. Minor paint loss and overall crazing or cracqluer of the paint surface. The framing treatment consists of a simple gold wood molding which is in good condition.. Approximate measurements with the frame are 1.5" deep x 22.63" wide x 18.5" high. Approximate canvas dimensions are 20" wide x 16: high.

A captivating and intriguing early 20th century Southern American folk art panel, found in Mississippi, depicting a figure with what appears to be African tribal headgear, and wearing a white collared shirt with black suit jacket. The line work and attention to detail is extraordinary and mysterious, with the artist choosing to incorporate a natural knot in the board to form the mouth of the figure, and the left half of the drawing showing shading, but seemingly left unfinished. The frame is not terribly old, and is constructed from splatter-painted boards...

Superb Ammi Phillips American Folk Art Portrait Painting, circa 1840
By Ammi Phillips
Located in Vero Beach, FL
Superb Ammi Phillips American Folk Art Portrait painting, circa 1840 We are proud of our acquisition of this authentic masterpiece by Ammi Phillips (1788-1865). The finely rendered portrait depicts an attractive young girl in a delightful lifelike quality. The pretty face is a refreshing change from the stern expressions of most of the paintings showing mature female or male sitters. Phillips palette is dark with a strikingly dramatic use of light to her face. The painting, on its original stretchers, is in untouched condition. The frame is period. This painting is unsigned, as are most of his works, but bares the unmistakable characteristics of a Phillips painting. Portrait of a young girl holding a book and wearing a golden whistle. From the New England estate of the renowned Folk Art Collector and scholar, John Bauer...
