"Chinese Russian" Painting on Wood Panel by Mose Tolliver

"Pairatoe ThuSA" (title is difficult to decipher) painting on wood panel by American artist Mose Tolliver (1925-2006), signed on the bottom lower left. Mose Tolliver is considered one of the most highly regarded American self-taught artists. Starting in the 1960s, Tolliver began painting, hanging his work in his front yard, selling them for a few dollars each. He signed them "Mose T," with a distinctive backward "S." Today, many of those paintings are valued in the thousands of dollars. His paintings hang today at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Smithsonian Institution and the New Orleans Museum of Art.Tolliver's work has been shown at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and placed at the forefront of the art world by being included in the exhibition, Black Folk Art...

My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging.
