Large Watercolor "Mother & Daughter" by Thure de Thulstrup
A very fine and large Swedish 19th Century watercolor portrait by Thure de Thulstrup (Swedish, 1848-1930) Titled "A Mother and Daughter Stroll at The Park". The beautifully and charming artwork depicting a young mother and daughter, walking through a dirt road, side by side and holding hands, both wearing traditional Swedish folk garb (Östra härad - Bleaking), the mother holding a book and papers and the young girl holding on to an umbrella; within its original gilt wood and gesso frame with a protective glass. This watercolor is purportedly formerly property from the Private Collection of The 22nd California Governor J.N. Gillett. Signed and Dated l/rt: Thulstrup, 82. A brass plaque on frame reads: "From the Collection of Gov. J.N. Gillett, 22nd Governor of Calif.", circa 1882. Thure de Thulstrup was born in Sweden on June 9, 1848, son of Magnus & Hedwig (Neé Akrell). His father was Minister of War of Sweden in 1916. He graduated form the National Military Academy in Stockholm and was an officer in the French Army serving in Algeria. He studied drawing in Paris and traveled to Canada as a topographical engineer. Later, while in Boston, he married Lucie Bavillot of New York on June 31, 1879. His first illustration was featured in The New York Graphic and then on Leslie's Weekly, subsequently and for many years thereafter, his works were featured in Harper's Weekly. Thulstrup self taught himself how to paint and became a member of the Society of Illustrators, The American Watercolor Society, The John Ericsson Society and became a Knight Order of Vasa, Sweden. Artist Information from "Who's Who" Vol IX, 1916-1917 (R920). Thulstrup was also featured in Who's Who in America 1897-1942 (R920). Measures: Height 44 inches (111.8 cm) Width 30 inches (76.2 cm) Frame height 59 1/4 inches (150.5 cm) Frame width 45 inches (114.3 cm) Frame depth 3 inches (7.6 cm).

- Condition DetailsA truly beautiful artwork. Overall condition is excellent, there is a small tear-restoration right above the signature (not very noticeable unless viewed very close). Frame has original gilt and minor age craquelure.
