About the Item

Jose Hernandez Delgadillo, (1927-2000), was raised on a farm in the state of Hidalgo and would become one of the most prolific muralists of Mexico with many of the more than 160 he created, politically and combatively charged. Delgadillo’s murals belong to the second stage of Mexican muralism having been executed principally in the 70’s. He was an activist to the end, a stance which jeopardized his artistic career with many murals of his purposely destroyed for their suggestive content. Drawn to painting at an early age, he left at 18 for Mexico City to study art. From 1955 to 1960 he attended the renown “La Esmeralda” School (the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving) and shortly after was inducted into The Salon of Mexican Plastic Arts (a branch of the National Institute of Fine Arts), an honor society of artists and prestigious accomplishment. The oil being offered is an early work circa 1955, possibly depicting a village very much like his own at the moment when it is catching the morning light. In stark contrast to his pioneering abstract work of later years, this early painting shows academic discipline and belongs to the period when this accomplished painter was trying to find his own language with the easel. (Canvas size is 13.75" x 19.75") Honorable Mention at the II Inter-American Biennial (1960) Major prize (1 of 6) presented to foreign artists - Second Biennial of Paris (1961) “Selections from the Biennial” (of Paris 1963) exhibition which toured several French cities Acquisition of one of his works by The Museum of Modern Art in Paris (1964) Awarded prize from Salon of Mexican Plastic Arts awarded (1964) He also presented his works in a one-man show at the Reflets Gallery of Brussels. In 1965 he gave another one-man show at the Biosca Gallery in Madrid; took part in the “Six Mexican Painters” exhibition at Paris’ University City, at the “Latin American Painters in Paris” and at a one-man exhibition at the Greuze Gallery in the French capital. In 1966 he exhibited at the Mer-Kup Gallery, participated in an exposition entitled “Self Portrait and Works”; took part in “Confrontation 66”; received a prize from the Salon of Mexican Plastic Arts for the second time, and exhibited his work at “Expo 67” in Canada.
