Antique Quilt, Mosaic/Honeycomb
Extraordinary fabrics cut into hexagons and pieced together form this elegant spread. Probably made by Mrs. O.E. Bishop, "about 78 years old", according to an old, handwritten tag attached to the corner. This 19th century design is seen in early antique quilts made in England. Much later, 20th century quilters popularized pastel, candy-colored versions of the pattern, typically in Midwestern America. This design is difficult to piece and here is the work of a quilt maker with a sophisticated eye for color and pattern. The chintz border retains its original glaze. Backing of beautiful blue-green and gray calico of the period.
