Antique Quilt "Rose of Sharon"

Antique appliqué quilt "Rose of Sharon." Flower motifs and appliqué quilts were a favorite combination of 19th century quilters, a tradition that was revived in the 1920s-1930s. This early example displays fine workmanship with a playful look at roses in full bloom, each surrounded by rosebuds. Red and green were a favorite color duo of needle workers skilled in the appliqué technique. "Waffle" and "double waffle" quilting patterns appear throughout the spread. The quilt is in excellent condition and the colors are strong yet gently softened by time.
