Folk Art Sailor Carved Coconut, circa 1800

$1,480

About

Sailors from various countries would carve green coconuts to help pass the time. This particular example is early and dates to circa 1800. It has some of the most interesting and folky figures, when compared with other examples. There are 3 full size figures, 2 faces, and an eagle clutching a snake. Most likely this is French or English, but could possibly be American as well. These were referred to as 'Bugbears' and were made throughout the late 18th and most of the 19th centuries and sometimes fitted with silver mouthpieces for use as a gun flask.
