Beverly Pepper (American, b. 1922) untitled, 1968. Steel sculpture in four parts with blue painted interior. Unsigned. Measure: Height 65 1/4 inches; width 36 inches; depth 30 inches. Purchased by current owner from Joan Sonnabend and the Obelisk Gallery in Boston, circa 1970. Full provenance available to buyer. Note: Beverly Pepper is an important 20th century American sculptor known for her monumental works, site specific and land art. She first studied advertising design, photography, and industrial design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, then embarked on a career as a commercial art director. She later studied at the Art Students League and Brooklyn College, where she studied art theory with György Kepes. Kepes introduced Pepper to the works of Lasló Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray. In her mid twenties she met the environmental artist Frederick Kiesler, who had a profound effect on her future career. Drawn to post-war Europe in 1949, she went to Paris where she attended classes with cubist painter André L'Hôte and Fernand Léger. Here career took off in the 1960's, after several exhibitions in New York and Rome. In 1962, she was one of ten artists invited to fabricate works in Italsider factories for an outdoor exhibition, "Sculture nella città"., along with other notable artists David Smith and Alexander Calder. Pepper has received several awards, including: Doctor of Fine Arts, Alumni Achievement Award and the Legends Award, from the Pratt Institute; Doctor of Fine Arts, The Maryland Institute; Accademico di Merito, University of Perugia; Cittadinanza Onoraria, Todi, Italy: Amic de Barcelona, city of Barcelona, Spain; Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France and The Alexander Calder Prize. Pepper along with Nancy Holt is a recipient of the International Sculpture Center's 2013 Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. Pepper's works have been exhibited and collected by major museums and galleries throughout the world.
