Sam Williams Signed Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth Carved Wood Totem Pole

About the Item

A striking hand carved Pacific Northwest Coast totem pole by Nuu-chah-nulth artist Sam Williams (1884?-1979). Williams was born in Vancouver, Canada (some say around 1880 others 1884) and was the first in a long line of family wood carving artists. Though influenced by tradition tribal carvings, he quickly developed his own style. Around the turn of the 20th century, he moved with his family to the Seattle, Washington area where he established on long term business relationship with the famed Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in Seattle. Sam worked on totem poles of all sizes His four sons often helped him work and would later follow in their father's footsteps and become tradition carvers as well in both Seattle and British Columbia, Canada. This work is signed by Williams at the backside. Would be a great addition to any Pacific Northwest Coast/Native American or folk art/artifacts collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.
