Abron Drum Attendant Standing Figure Arms Out, Ghana, Early 20th Century
About the Item
Abron Drum Attendant standing figure with both arms out front. From Ghana, early 20th century. Rich, dark patina to the surface.
A wonderful streamlined (really Art Deco in feeling) or cubist style dancing male figure from a drum ensemble. The carving style suggest it is from the Bron people, part of the larger Akan culture of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. Wood with black patina, probably created in the early to mid-20th century for use as a display figure in front of a drumming group. The flexed knees and extended arms with hands cupped is a typical Akan dance gesture.
