Pre-Columbian Gold Dignitary Figure
This pendant was most likely meant to represent a sort of portrait of the bearer, an important chieftain or "cacique." The depicted male figure wears a crown or headdress, necklace, belt, armbands, several earrings, and a "nariguera" or nose ornament, indicating high social status. The figure is composed of Tumbaga gold, an alloy used during pre-Columbian times, composed of gold-copper or gold-silver. Virtually all objects were cast using the lost wax method in Tumbaga gold, after which the surfaces were gilded by oxidation. Estate of Carlos Rodriguez
