Tribal house panel from Nagaland with mithun motif. Mid-20th century. Mounted on a steel base. This commemorative house panel from Nagaland, most probably from an area bordering Manipur, was a decorative feature marking the house of a respected and well off family. The central motifs are of the Mithun is a semi domesitcated bovine of great importance in Naga society, and which plays a central role in their great celebratory feasts. Traditionally, these feasts of merit were sponsored by wealthy Naga households and were central to their gaining and maintaining societal status. Panels such as this one were markers that the household had organized such as feast, and had thereby shared its vitality with, and transmitted its fertility to, the rest of the village. The red color used on the panel represents the life force, vitality and fertility. Dimensions: 108 inches tall by 16 inches wide by 7 inches deep. The metal base is 18 inches by 18 inches.
