Beaux Arts Bronze Ovoid Pendant from Michigan Central Station, Detroit

About the Item

Opulent and majestic oversize egg shaped pendant light in bronze with opaline glass and gilt brass ornaments. This would be perfect hanging in a formal stairwell or front entrance hall stately home. This light was designed circa 1912 for the main waiting room of Detroit's Michigan Central Station which recently reopened after an extensive restoration. MCS first opened in 1914 and was built by the firms Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore who had also collaborated to build Grand Central Station in NYC. See additional photos which show the original blueprint drawing, images from the early 20th century and very recent images which show this light in situ. The ovoid fixture itself is 36” high from the bottom pine cone finial to top of its integral ring; height is 39" inclusive of the first two links of chain - one of which is the master link that can be opened to attach the additional 4ft of chain (which includes the ornamental chain break) up to the canopy. Canopy is 10 inches diameter by 4 inches heigh. The oval pendant is 19” diameter in the center. Michigan Central Station sat unused for many years after closing in 1988 and became a symbol of blight and decay, looted, vandalized and covered in grafitti. Sponsored by Ford the redevelopment and restoration began in 2018. As the station's original fixtures had been vandalized or looted long ago it was a great blessing when workers discovered in an onsite storage trailer most of the original blueprints and drawings from the original 1912 construction, including all the specifications for the lighting. Thanks to the dedication and craftsmanship of many this fixture is an identical recreation. I have not yet attempted to look inside behind the opal glass panels to determine the exact lighting capacity.
