Gervasoni Small Brass Suspension Lamp in Matt Brass by Paola Navone
Located in Brooklyn, NY
With a strong decorative impact, the BRASS lamp family exploits the ductility of brass and its ability to embellish interiors with warm and golden light reflections. Suspension lamps have a delicate shape of great visual appeal: a light brass disc with a slight curvature in the smaller version or very accentuated in the larger one that floats in the air reflecting light poetically and suggestively. They can be used individually or combined with each other for an even more suggestive and cinematographic effect. Given the total craftsmanship of the product, it is possible that small stains may appear over time due to oxidation of the brass. These stains are therefore not defects but a characteristic of the material. Small superficial marks, scratches, creases etc. are caused by the hand-hammering process on the brass, so they are characteristic of the manufacturing process. - Brass Suspension lamp in brass metal sheet, matt transparent lacquered. Tops brass metal sheet, hand polished surface - Aluminium Top cast aluminium, hand polished surface. Both surface tops are not subject to any treatment in order to obtain the best brilliance therefore, the surface can be easily scratched. Superficial scratches can be removed using appropriate paste for cleaning metal parts. Due to the used material, it is quite normal the surface will become darker over time. Suspension lamp in hammered matt brass. Max. power 18 W, 220 Volt, bulb holder E 27, bulb not included. (electrical cable lenght 250 cm; steel cable lenght 200 cm) Additional Information: Material: Brass Finish: Matt brass Power supply: Max. power 18 W, 220 Volt, bulb holder E 27 Dimension: 80 W x 70 D x 18 H cm Available in other size option: Large Quick Ship: Brass 95...

Uno & Östen Kristiansson Brass Ceiling Light for Luxus AB Vittsjö, Sweden, 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This marvellous, brass six-light ceiling light was created in what we now call “the golden age of Scandinavian design”. The period saw the revival of an elementary, undecorated visual language, emphasizing sleek design and craftsmanship as this Swedish model demonstrates. Uno & Östen Kristiansson’s present model has a brass body with six arms, each one holding a tubular white acrilyc shade on an elongated shade holder. Following the sleek shape of the shade holders, the rod and the arms uniting at the cluster have the same shape resulting in a sleek look with a contemporary edge. The structure is uncluttered so that the shades can stand out. The eye-catching brass body balances the minimalist look with the warmth the light creates. Thanks to the arrangement of the white acrylic shades, light is distributed evenly in all directions when switched on. The combination of materials, shapes, and textures creates this lamp’s modern, sleek design, a clear return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the flowing, organic lines of the reconstruction of the early 20th century. Defined by long, vertical lines, this model is uniquely stylish and guaranteed to stand out. In 1950, Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, which was situated in Vittsjö. In the 1950s, the collections were launched nationally in Sweden, and internationally across Europe. Swedish designers and brothers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, were particularly active from the 1950s to the 1970s in Sweden. They were prolific designers with a clear design aesthetic that is easily recognizable as Scandinavian modern. Condition: In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The brass has some small marks and stains. Dimensions: 32.28 in Ø x 33.85 in H 82 cm Ø x 86 cm H About the Designer: Swedish designers and brothers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, known for their lighting and mirror designs, were particularly active from the 1950s to the 1970s in Sweden. Although there is a dearth of biographical information available on the pair, their designs are nonetheless appreciated by vintage lovers, and are highly sought-after on the vintage market today. Uno was born in 1925, and Östen two years later in 1927. Little is known about their formative years, but it can be surmised that they spent their early years in southern Sweden, learning the furniture trade from their father who ran his own furniture business, Vittsjö Furniture (established in 1919), named after the Swedish village in which it was located. In 1950, Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, which was also situated in Vittsjö. He produced a range of products, including home and interior lamps, furniture and mirrors, that were designed by the two brothers. In the 1950s, the collections were launched nationally in Sweden, and internationally across Europe. In 1968, Luxus presented a collection of lamps with brightly coloured textile shades that perfectly encapsulated the mood of the 1960s. They are said to have been designed by renowned Finnish textile...

Antique, Vintage and Contemporary Chandeliers and Pendant Lights

Chandeliers — simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron — first made an appearance in early churches. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today.

While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers — and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen — it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today.

The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite — see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.

Chandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.

For midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed.

The versatility and variability of these lighting staples mean that, when it comes to finding something like the perfect chandelier, you’ll never be left hanging. From the whimsical — like the work of Beau & Bien’s Sylvie Maréchal, frequently inspired by her dreams — to the classic beauty of Paul Ferrante's fixtures, there is a style for every room. With designs for pendant lights and chandeliers across eras, colors and materials, you’ll never run out of options to explore on 1stDibs.
