French Bronze Cherub Chandelier with Violet and White Glass Signed by Degué

About the Item

This absolutely delightful French Art Nouveau four-light chandelier features an ornate bronze fixture adorned with roses and three cherubs, each holding a light with a glass lampshade; and an interior light that brightens the beautiful dark violet, white and orange “Pâte de Verre” glass bowl shade signed Degué, of the “Verrerie D'Art Degué” manufacture. Dimensions: height: 69 cm / 27.16 in; diameter: 52 cm / 20.47 in. Four new sockets for E14 size light bulbs. The beautiful multicolored glass bowl was made in the “Pâte de Verre” technique, used in the production of multicolored glass: a cold-formed paste of glass powder and dyes is filled in a refractory mold and then fired in a muffle furnace, wherein the glass melts into the desired shape. To achieve polychrome color effects, the process is repeated with other colors. The production of Pâte de Verre is a slow process that requires a lot of manual skill to avoid bubbles, cloudiness, and cracks in the cooling process. The technique allows for accurate shapes and accurate color gradations in the workpiece, unlike any other glass processing technique. The technique was already known in ancient Rome and Egypt. Especially in the Art Nouveau period, and later in the Art Deco era, she found artistic use again in works by French glass artists such as Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, Henry Cros, Albert Dammouse, François Décorchemont, Amalric Walter, Émile Gallé, and George Despret. The Crystal Daum, a French manufacturer of commercial glassware, produced numerous works from Pâte de Verre.
