Lisa Johansson-Pape for Orno Rare Chandelier in Brass and Off-White Fabric

About the Item

Lisa Johansson-Pape for Stockmann-Orno, chandelier, brass, fabric, lacquered steel and aluminum, Finland, 1950s Lisa Johansson-Pape’s suspended luminaire reflects her commitment to creating atmospheric yet functional light through carefully balanced materials and understated forms. The design is defined by its delicately tensioned fabric shade in a neutral off-white color, stretched over a lacquered steel framework that remains subtly visible through the translucent surface. At the center, a sculptural brass “crown” element provides a subtle decorative accent , a motif that frequently recurs throughout Johansson-Pape’s lighting designs. The lamp produces a soft, warm, and highly diffused light, while simultaneously accentuating the sculptural brass crown element. The translucent fabric shade filters and disperses the illumination evenly across the surface of the fixture, reducing glare and creating a calm atmospheric glow. Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907–1989) was one of Finland’s leading designers and is best known for her pioneering work in lighting design. Trained originally as a furniture designer, she began designing light fixtures in 1942 for the Stockmann-Orno lighting factory, where she later served as artistic director. Johansson-Pape herself reflected on this transition: “It was quite by accident that I became a lighting designer. By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war. The light fixtures began to interest me to such an extent that I set aside furniture design. I wish to provide every Finnish household with good light.” Working with materials such as enamelled metal, brass, acrylic, and glass, Johansson-Pape created lighting designs that combined technical innovation with practical functionality and refined aesthetics. Her lamps were designed not only for homes but also for public spaces including hospitals, churches, and ships, where thoughtful illumination was essential. Johansson-Pape’s work represented Finland at numerous international exhibitions and received widespread critical acclaim, establishing her as a significant figure on the international design stage. Kindly note that we have more of these lights in our current stock, perfect for a larger project or space.
