    Designed in 1963, by Hans Harald Rath the Metropolitan Chandelier was created as a commission for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The Lincoln Center commission was ordered to Lobmeyr by the Republic of Austria as a gift in gratitude for the United States aid in the European Recovery Program after World War II. The very first ovation in the Metropolitan Opera house erupted when the chandelier rose toward the ceiling on its grand opening night, September 16, 1966. The piece was made of 49,000 Swarovski crystals and 1,000 sputniks. The inspiration for this design was supplied by the architect of the Metropolitan Opera House, Wallace K. Harrison who presented pictures of distant galaxies. Rath presented his design concept to the architect and the Lincoln Center committee with a prototype made of potatoes and toothpicks.
