About the Item

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1885, sculptor Paul Manship lived in a time of remarkable progress and change. His most notable works, however, drew heavily on influences from the classical past. As Manship traversed Europe as a young man in 1909, he developed an appreciation for the fluidity and rhythm found in ancient Greek statues. Later, the subjects of Manship's sculptures often centered around Greek and Roman mythology. In a nod to the archaic style Manship admired, his sculptures focused on simplified and stylized forms, a harsh contrast to the Beaux-Arts classical realism of the time. After a thorough visual analysis of Manship's work, we believe that this chandelier was inspired by the myth of the Ophiuchus constellation. This theory is supported by the fact that Manship featured Ophiuchus in one of his prior works, "The Celestial Sphere," and depicted the figure similarly with both hands firmly grasping a serpent. To the ancient Greeks, this constellation represented the god Apollo grappling with a huge snake that guarded the Oracle of Delphi. Versions of this myth are also found in Islamic and Babylonian cultures. History lesson aside, this chandelier is a veritable feast for the eyes and a true work of art. Made entirely of cast bronze, Manship's technical skill as a sculptor is evident in the graceful, sinuous lines of each figure's body, and the elegant, yet not overwrought, organic ornamentation, circa 1925 Condition: Excellent, restored & wear based on age.
