Poise, Pendant in Paper and Lead, S, YMER&MALTA, France

$362.38per item

About

Pairing a strong shape with a fragile material, Poise is a clean, modern origami. The pendant comes with a 6m (19,7’) long cable freeing up creative possibilites for installation. The graphic lines of the cable going up and down in the space complement the geometric shape of the paper volume As with the Akari Series from the 1950s, the required assembly of the paper is part of the experience of this lamp, a tactical engagement fostering a deeper connection with the piece. As Valérie Maltaverne was studying Isamu Noguchi’s work to develop the Akari Unfolded collection, she was captivated by one sculpture in particular where the artist had assembled several small objects found on the beach in a suspended mobile. With this sculpture in mind she developed the “Poise” design with Sebastian Bergne. The lead weight suspended at the end of the cord is meticulously calculated to give “Poise” the perfect angle. It was designed to match the graphics of the paper volume and fabricated by a French producer of fishing leads. To achieve the perfect folding process and the ideal diffuse lighting effect necessitated a long research and prototyping process and testing of several different paper types. Poise is part of the Akari Unfolded collection created by the YMER&MALTA Studio for The Noguchi Museum to pay homage to the iconic Akari series by Isamu Noguchi. This collection was exhibited in 2018/2019 at The Noguchi Museum in New York. Poise is in a numbered edition and each piece has a "Certificate of Authenticity".

About The Maker

The French furniture design studio YMER&MALTA occupies a special niche situated at the crossroads of design, art and craftsmanship, winning extraordinary recognition from major museums around the world. Both the Noguchi Museum in New York and the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie d’Aubusson in France commissioned the studio’s most recent collections. While, 60 of the 90 objects created by YMER&MALTA have been exhibited by museums and 20 have been acquired as part of their permanent collections, such as those of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris or the Centre Georges Pompidou. Key to the success of the Studio are the visionary projects created under the direction of Valérie Maltaverne, who set out in 2009 to revolutionize techniques historically used to produce decorative furniture, creating new design universes for the 21st century. Challenging the boundaries of century old craftsmanship requires a Herculean effort: the reinvention necessary to execute never seen before objects requires years of experimentation with new technology. Also it relies on an intimate and patient collaboration between the Studio Creative Director and the craftsmen, always French. Empowered by its experience in the creation and production of exceptional design pieces, YMER&MALTA studio puts its competencies at the service of bespoke projects. YMER&MALTA pieces are historical in the true sense of the word and are available only in limited and numbered editions.
