Sergio Mazza two pendant lights 'Pi Cavo', Artemide, Italy, 1962

About the Item

Roberto Matta (1911-2002) graduated as an architect from Santiago de Chile in 1935 but became embroiled with the Surrealist movement in Europe and practised as a painter from the late 1930s onwards. His work is included in the permanent collections of significant museums including MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) in New York City. Mazza’s ‘Pi Cavo’ lights, designed for Artemide, are part of a range of lighting designs named after letters in the Greek alphabet including Delta, Gamma, Kappa, and Tau. They have a strong architectonic design in keeping with Matta’s original training, and a sensitivity to materials exemplified by the metal elements made from nickel-plated brass and internally frosted glass. LITERATURE: Domus 399 (febbraio 1963), p. d/108 catalogo Artemide 1969, p. 62.

  • Richard Sapper ‘Tizio’ Table Lamp Artemide, Italy, 1972
    By Artemide, Richard Sapper
    Located in London, GB
Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. It has become “an icon of high-tech design”, according to the MoMA where an example exhibited, and had its heyday as the lamp of choice for the design-conscious bright young things...
