This fantastic figural chandelier is known in Germany as a Lustermannchen. The oldest examples on record date to the early 1400s, and were only made in Southern Germany. The combination of a carved wooden statue and large antlers made the perfect decoration for lodges and castles for hundreds of years. A majority of these were Lusterweibchen, “luster” meaning light, and “weibchen” meaning woman. The statues portrayed noble women, mermaids, and sometimes mythical creatures. A simple cartouche or coat of arms plaque often adorned the underneath part of the chandelier. The more unusual of this overall type of chandelier depicted a male, such as the one you see here. These are called Lustermannchen. Our example dates to the 1700s and depicts a youthful figure with curly hair, wearing cream colored robes with gilt highlights. The shaped and incurved coat of arms is painted in the same cream color, with a gold border and heraldic bend sinister. He is flanked by two large antlers, and hangs by 3 decorative iron rods (added later). We have it re-wired for American use, and it is supplied with a black chain and canopy. This is one of the more unusual antique German chandeliers...

Large scale forged iron and carved chandelier (circa 1780-1830) in Louis XVI style. Central body hand carved in French oak partially covered with original gesso and painted finish. Adorned in original gilt decoration. Original heavy, black-smith forged-iron undulating arms extend from body outwards. The six hand forged arms feature remnants of original gesso and paint and large giltwood acanthus leaves. Arms terminate in giltwood bobeches and candelabra size lights (originally arms narrowed to sharp points for large candles). Only minor restoration was necessary (some of the acanthus leaves and new candle cups). The original finish is untouched. Chandelier is newly wired using all UL listed parts for use within the USA.
