19th Century Spanish Arab Islamic Style Brass Oil Lamp with Alhambra Lions

About the Item

A highly decorative (and functional) Spanish standing brass oil lamp, in Andalusian Arab or Islamic style. The five abstracted lions that ring the oil reservoir and support the burning wicks are reminiscent of the lion sculptures surrounding the iconic fountain at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. Hanging from a series of chains are tools for maintaining the lamp. The adjustable metal lamp shade keeps the lamplight from shining directly into the eyes. With a bit of care (and bravery?) the lamp could be used as it was intended, or simply as a touch of the exotic and reminder of how necessity and design can combine to create something functional that brings pleasure to the eye and intrigue to the mind.
