This stunning Italian geometric form light sculpture, produced circa 1965-72, is beautifully crafted in stainless steel with a white enamelled interior.
The quality and delicacy of the metalwork is superb featuring a series of light slots arranged in a chequerboard pattern.
The internal light source is an 18W fluorescent light tube which not only provides illumination but is also an important and integral visual component of the design , a minimal design feature that modernist greats such as Eileen Gray ,Gerrit Rietveld and later Gino Sarfatti incorporated into several of his most sought after designs (see Arteluce models 1056, 3026). and made famous worldwide by the flourescent light tube sculptures of U.S artist Dan Flavin where the flourescent light tubes were used as both the light source and the form of the sculpture.
This design is also very similar in choice of materials, concept ,form and quality to the beautiful artisan crafted light sculptures designed by the architects Fabrizio Cocchia and Gianfranco Fini for the company 'NEWLAMP' based in Rome during the same period and liken NEWLAMP also references the kinetic and op art movements of the 1960s..
This light sculpture was originally designed to be wall mounted, and still retains the original rear plate for wall mounting. However it could just as easily be used as a sculptural table lamp if you attached felt padding to the mounting plate.
