About the Item

A rare and striking lampshade designed by German-born, California-based textile artist Maria Kipp, celebrated for her masterful use of handwoven fibers in postwar interiors. This piece exemplifies her signature blend of organic texture and modernist geometry, woven from natural raffia, flax, jute, and metallic threads. Kipp’s textiles were prominently featured in interiors by modernist icons including Paul László, Richard Neutra, and Rudolph Schindler, and her work was widely used in high-end commercial and residential projects throughout mid-century Southern California. *Note, this listing is for the shade only, no lamp is included. However we have many vintage table and floor lamps in stock, contact us if you are interested in pairing a lamp with this shade. Rendered in rich goldenrod, amber, and burnt sienna tones, this handcrafted shade features a distinctive horizontal banded weave that highlights Kipp’s mastery of texture and pattern. The interplay of fine warp and weft gives the shade a luminous warmth and rhythmic visual structure, typical of her custom work for leading Los Angeles interiors in the 1950s - 1970s. Highly collectible and increasingly scarce, Kipp’s lampshades offer a sculptural, light-filtering accent ideal for collectors, designers, and enthusiasts of mid-century and California modern design. The blend of earthy, natural materials and refined, architectural patterning gives these shades a timeless versatility, equally at home in desert modern, Scandinavian, Japandi, or wabi-sabi spaces. Whether used on a vintage lamp base or incorporated into a custom lighting installation, this shade brings warmth, history, and handcrafted beauty to any room. MEASUREMENTS: H 20.75" x W 17.5" x D 17.5" CONDITION: Good vintage condition with minor wear and blemishes including some looseness and minor losses to fabric and some minor losses to wood tips / ends.
