Rococo More Lighting

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

Hand Painted Porcelain Capo Di Monte Lamp of Bacchus, Italy, 19th Century, Italy
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Italian porcelain hand painted traditional urn shape lamp by Capo Di Monte. Urn shape in form, the top is accented with two handles with swirls highly decorated in light pink, gold and yellow. The lamp widens at the bottom of the handles and tapers down to a wider body. The body of this decorative lamp features scenes of robed figures of men and women at a Bacchanalian feast. Decoration includes scenes of women draped in various color robes such as pink green and yellow. Bacchus is depicted as surrounded by women and sports a dark beard and floral crown. The top includes piercing throughout. The bottom of the porcelain portion of the lamp is decorated in a pink rope pattern around the edges. Just above, figures of light mint green leaves or petals are painted with gold hand painted edges. The base of the lamp is made up of a gold or brass metal with an ornate floral pattern. Inside appears to be iron or steel. The shape of the metal base is square in form with a pinched design at each side. Original harp included, however no shade. How we would style it: A rare piece such as this Capo Di Monte deserves to be seen. It reminds us of the Venetian home of Dodie Rosekrans. Filled with timeless classical pieces, each with their own story. This lovely lamp deserves a home of a true collector who has a deep appreciation for classical Italian art. We love the idea of this piece in a foyer with a small fringe lamp...

Interesting Gilt Bronze and Crystal "Grotesque" Chandelier
Located in New York, NY
An interesting early 20th century gilt bronze and crystal twenty-six-light "Grotesque" chandelier. A unique Gothic style, drop crystal, basket chandelier with different "Grotesque" faces and designs. Twenty-four-tiered perimeter lights (including six lanterns) and two-tiered interior lights. Artists began to give the tiny faces of the figures in grotesque decorations strange caricatured expressions, in a direct continuation of the medieval traditions of the drolleries in the border decorations or initials in illuminated manuscripts. From this the term began to be applied to larger caricatures, such as those of Leonardo da Vinci, and the modern sense began to develop. It is first recorded in English in 1646 from Sir Thomas Browne: "In nature there are no grotesques". By extension backwards in time, the term became also used for the medieval originals, and in modern terminology medieval drolleries, half-human thumbnail vignettes drawn in the margins, and carved figures on buildings (that are not also waterspouts, and so gargoyles) are also called "grotesques". A Boom in the production of works of art in the grotesque genre, characterized the period 1920–1933 of German art. In contemporary illustration art, the "grotesque" figures, in the ordinary conversational sense, commonly appear in the genre grotesque art...
