About the Item

A pair of antique French Neoclassical bronze gilt bronze candlestand floor lamps circa 1900. This pair of French floor lamps has a marvelous amount of detail reflecting the Belle Époque period interest in lavish decoration while taking advantage of the latest innovation, electricity. Each lamp has a square block of marble for the base which, along with the solid bronze columns, give these lamps stability and a luxurious sense of presence. Each marble block base is raised on rectangular gilt bronze feet with an embossed decorative pattern that complements the Neoclassical design of the other gilt bronze elements seen on the column. The square gilt bronze base on top of the marble has a fully realized decorative pattern before the base of the column shifts to a circular lotus bulb shape with acanthus leaf pattern. The rich lustrous gleam of the gilt bronze against both the marble base and the dark bronze of the column is a favorite French decorative choice and began to be used in the late eighteenth century when rooms were illuminated by candlelight and fire in the hearth. Notice how the bronze columns feature a pattern of recessed fluting that gives a lovely sense of movement as the light plays across the surface. At the top of each column is another section of gilt bronze fitted with band of repeated geometric motifs below the flared upper section again repeating the acanthus leaf design seen at the base. This pair of superbly crafted French floor lamps have been wired for American electricity and fitted for standard base bulbs. Both lamps have a simple black shade chosen to increase their dramatic presence in an interior.
