About the Item

?? What is it? — This signed Martz Model 167 lamp comes in a matte, unglazed white base. This model was slipcast then painted with a white slip, giving the lamp its bright white color. A rounded base is topped with an upturned collar that houses a tapered walnut neck. Because the lamp is unglazed, it has a very matte appearance and is more dry and textured than most other Martz specimen. Some caution should be taken to keep dirty (flaming hot ??), fingers, pencil, pen, red wine ??, etc off the lamp since the clay remains capable of absorbing stains. This model first appeared in the Fall 1957 catalog and was produced until the late 1960's. The base form of this lamp would continue to be used to produce several additional models of lamp through the remainder of Marshall Studios. ?? MARTZ / MARSHALL STUDIOS 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg, Indiana to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martz's work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene. ?? All original hardware and cord, which all remains in good working condition. Walnut neck has been refinished and is looking excellent. Because this is a natural and unglazed item, there is some variations in the clay body. No chips or cracks.
