Mid-Century Torchiere Floor Lamp by Walter von Nessen

About the Item

Mid-Century torchiere floor lamps by Walter von Nessen, each finished in white enameled aluminum. The form is spare and deliberate — a slender cylindrical stem rises from a flat circular base and opens into a wide conical shade that directs light upward. A white lacquered wood ball knob serves as the on/off switch, positioned near the junction of the stem and shade. The all-white composition reads as a unified sculptural form. Walter von Nessen emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1920s and became a significant figure in American industrial and decorative design. His studio, Nessen Studios, established in New York, produced lighting notable for its geometric restraint and attention to functional clarity. Von Nessen's work bridged European modernism and American commercial production, and his torchiere designs became emblematic of that synthesis. All three lamps show enamel loss and wear consistent with age and use, and are in similar vintage condition overall.
