Pair of Antique Italian Carved Alabaster Figural Lamps Venus & Cupid

About the Item

A beautiful pair of antique Italian hand carved alabaster lamps / torcheres depicting Venus and a cupid. One is a classic allegory to Titian's painting "Venus with a Mirror". Much like the painting, a cupid holds a mirror towards Venus. But here, Venus looks at herself while being half nude and is seen carefully fixing her hair. The carved scene is one that showcases playfulness and beauty. The second lamp portrays Venus' other facet. In here, she looks at the cupid while bashfully covering her body. She is now fully nude and a vine of leaves can be seen going across her body. The cupid looks at her playfully and can be seen with the intention of climbing towards her. This lamp shows more resemblance to Botticelli's Birth of Venus, where Venus' gestures are a reflection of feelings of shamefulness. Each lamp is raised on black marble pedestal. Height of lamps: 49" and 48" Height of pedestals: 35.5" Note: The lamps can be sold without the pedestals.

For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4] Among Coutan's students were Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Raymond Delamarre...

  • Lunar Sanctuary Floor Lamp with Alabaster Moon Bulb
    Located in London, GB
The Lunar Sanctuary floor lamp is an ode to French architectural theorist Etienne-Louis Boullée's monument to Newton. A spiritual shrine that turns out was impossible to build. Shaw Liu finds inspiration in this unrealised architecture, particularly its spherical body, which was intended to mimic the effects and day and night. It is the balanced art of light, dark and the in between. This art deco light features a long, mirrored body, an exploration of the tangible and intangible. Reflections are phantom-like and can be inconsistent. Almost hallucinogenic, Sanctuary's hollow dome symbolises the eternal spirit of Newton, whilst its light is akin to a glowing moon. Best placed as a floor lamp, its interior becomes aglow with the orb sat within it. This piece is an evolution of Sanctuary Illusion, which features a projecting light bulb. Reminiscent of light bollards, crafted in hand-polished stainless steel. It is made to be paired with an alabaster bulb which mimics the texture and façade of a full moon. A robust and milky mineral prized by Egyptians, it becomes aglow with its distinct pattern. Striking and truly distinctive, it belongs in the company of equally remarkable objects, including the homes of the audacious, and as lighting for art...
