About the Item

Pair of French Modernist Art Deco Flush Mounts by Holophane (Verlys, Les Andelys), France, 1920s. An exceptional pair of French Art Deco flush mount ceiling lights designed by Holophane, the legendary glass manufacturer known for its innovative prismatic glass. These 1920s French modernist light fixtures combine timeless design with impeccable craftsmanship. Each fixture features a beautifully molded milk glass shade, secured by a metal plaque with chromed buttons, creating a sleek geometric silhouette typical of the French Art Deco period. Marked “Holophane 3352 Made in France” on the rim (see photos). Height: 3.9" (10 cm) Diameter: 13.8" (35 cm) Condition: Excellent vintage condition. About Holophane and Verlys The story of Holophane begins in 1822 with Augustin Fresnel’s invention of the Fresnel lens—revolutionizing light diffusion and distribution. Building on that innovation, André Blondel patented the prismatic molded glass technique in 1893 under the name Holophane, derived from Greek meaning “harmonious distribution of light.” In 1898, American entrepreneur Otis Mygatt acquired the patent, establishing Holophane Glass Co. (USA) for manufacturing and Holophane Limited (UK) for European sales. By 1920, the company expanded into France, founding Holophane SA in Les Andelys, Normandy—an area rich in glassmaking heritage. Holophane collaborated with skilled artisans from eastern France, including experts from Baccarat, to produce prismatic glass for public lighting, optical blocks, and Art Deco lighting under the brand Verrerie des Hanots. In 1925, Verrerie des Hanots launched a new artistic line: Verlys—a name formed from VERrerie des AndeLYS. Verlys produced exquisite art glass vases, bowls, and lighting that soon rivaled works by Lalique, Schneider, and Etling. Each Verlys creation reflected the elegance and innovation of early 20th-century French design, often featuring intricate reliefs and frosted finishes. Although Verlys production ended around 1946, its legacy continues to captivate collectors of Art Deco and modernist glass lighting worldwide.
