About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular and original pair of wall sconces; they were made between 1920 and 1923 in a foundry near Villedieu-les-Poeles (France), a small town on the English Channel, famous for its foundries of copper, bronze, tin, and brass; the skilled craftsmen have created the bronze part in a rich Art Nouveau style, inspired by the fashion of those years; they then applied two opaline glasses with a graceful wavy bell shape typical of the Belle Epoque; the electrical wires are not visible because they pass inside the arms and come out on the back where there is also support for fixing to the wall. Bronze is workable only by fusion, unlike, for example, iron which, made red-hot, can be forged with a hammer and take the desired shape; in fact, a piece of bronze, overheated, would shatter at the first hammering, instead, melted and poured into a hollow container, it will take the shape; It is for this reason that the two sconces were made in bronze with a masterful and elaborate sand casting; sand casting is one of the most widely used casting procedures for the production of metal pieces. It consists of casting the molten metal inside a mold made of special earth, called foundry earth, which will be broken at the end of the process in order to extract the piece (see example photo). This type of procedure is expensive because it requires a new form of land every time, the object at the end is quite rough so the artifacts, after the merger, require a careful, meticulous, and delicate finishing chisel, which must be done by hand always by master craftsmen (see sample photo), after which the products are subjected to bright gilding; The result of all these processes can be seen and appreciated in our two sconces! The electrical system with a bayonet connection is working but the wiring is European, the compatibility of the voltage in other countries must always be verified by an electrician before use.
