Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, Rare Pair of Large Sconces, Italy 1955

About the Item

Designed in 1955 by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, this rare pair of large wall sconces exemplifies the poetic elegance and technical mastery that defined postwar Italian lighting. Each sconce features three overlapping glass blades in delicate pastel tones—amber, aquamarine, and smoked grey—arranged around a central opaline glass diffuser. A sculpted brass fitting secures the ensemble, adding both warmth and precision. The layered transparency of the glass generates a dynamic play of light and color, casting a soft radiance that shifts subtly with the angle of view. With its flower-like geometry and refined materiality, this piece embodies Ingrand’s unique ability to merge decorative impulse with architectural clarity. Both sconces retain their original wiring (rewiring is recommended; European rewiring can be provided upon request and included in the price). The brass shows a beautiful, even patina, and the glass panels are in very good vintage condition, with one glass blade showing a light scratch and one brass detail showing a small surface mark (as pictured). More than functional lighting, these sconces are sculptural gestures—timeless objects that animate interiors with delicacy and depth.
