About the Item

Beautiful and extremely rare, surrealist hand appliques by 'Maison Arlus,' Paris, circa 1960 (published in March 1962). Please note the listed photo's have some pixel distortions on the edges, my apologies for this. This is a Mac digital transfer problem and we are working hard to resolve this, they do not show on the actual pieces Please note these are a rare true pair ie with different handed, left and right hand forms to make a genuine realistic pair. We found each of these appliques separately, it took several years for us to find the second applique to make a matching handed pair , this is why the color of the surface patination is different on each applique , one previous owner had never polished the applique before while the other had only done the occasional light polishing ie both have vintage surface patination but to varying degrees, after thorough hand polishing the brass tone will match on both. These appliques still retain their original light fittings, but one of the appliques appears to be missing the upper circular plate underneath the light fitting which covers the opening in the casting, this is all covered by the opaline glass globe so you don't see this at all and this plate really has no function. We could probably have one fabricated should you need this but it seems an unnecessary expense. We have left the appliques with original patination to the brass to prove that these are 100% guaranteed genuine and authentic vintage examples. We will hand polish them and rewire them for free should the buyer wish to have a bright brass finish, they are super high quality super thick, heavy cast solid brass so it is impossible to polish through the brass finish A custom made backplate for mounting against the wall is also included. According to original period Arlus advertisements of the time these appliques were designated model number '1436' and they were exhibited at the prestigious 'Salons des arts menagers' exhibition . Please see IMAGE 2,3 and 4 This design is also published in the March, 1962 issue of French design periodical "Mon jardin et ma maison' among others so the likely original production date is earlier. The sculptural stylized hands feature exquisite detailing and are made from very thick and heavy, high quality cast solid brass supporting opaline glass globes. These rare appliques are a real work of art and would fit well within a diverse style of interiors from classical interiors right through to surrealist. Literature : 'Mon jardin et ma maison.'
