About the Item

Elegant large pair of sconce to frame a wide mirror or a large entrance. Requires professional and skilled makers as the benting of the triedri was made keeping the crest out with a great play with light. Eight elements each. Tall. Very stylish and deco. Uses four candelabra sockets. To be required for your country specifications. The gray filigree and curving withness Murano making. The clear part is optically neutral. Filigree triedri cannot be made with extruded glass. There is a common attribution of the triedri construction to Venini and curvati are a Carlo Nason design. However Carlo Nason did not design these. The situation is more complex. All considering I am assigning the pieces designed by and attributed to for keyword search. It's a beautiful pair of sconces. Unknown origin. I am assessing an 1990s production. Triedri and Quadriedri were developed as biconvex clear lenses to keep the light output without shading, spreading the light to reduce the hot spot effect. Identifications, references: Quality of glass triedri, gray filigree and optical feature identifies the piece as made in Murano. Evaluation assessment: By complexity of manufacturing and quality of both hardware and glass, By the uniqueness of the pieces and the Fine aesthetics. Special note: This chandelier was designed for glass with high refraction index, the straight triedri itself was created to have a convex spreading lens. Refraction is what makes the glass appear brilliant (higher in diamonds, crystal and potash glass). Glass used in Murano for this chandelier was a special potash glass, it's harder and thus more difficult to work, has more shoulder and allows elongation. The optic quality is important for the beauty of the fixture lit, and unlit. Starting from the 90s cheap lucite knock-outs were made industrially in Germany, USA and China. These can be found at a fraction of the cost. The lower refraction of lucite shows more the outline of the hardware, the hot spot of the bulbs and has plastic feel. Glass curvati are the real thing.

Carlo Nason

A mid-century modern reference for today’s Murano glassmakers, Carlo Nason influenced the current tradition of glassmaking on an island renowned for it for hundreds of years. Celebrated for their exceptional designs, Nason’s lighting fixtures are sought after by collectors worldwide.

Learning to design and craft pieces from the family vetreria — rather than partaking in any formal training — Nason was working with the maestros at his family’s company furnace, V. Nason & C., attached to their family home by the time he was 11 years old. Although his roots are in Murano glassmaking, he took inspiration from the clean lines and natural colors of the Japanese metal vases he had seen in his youth at Milanese fairs.

Wanting to produce modern glass lamps, Nason worked with his family friend Gianni Mazzega of Mazzega Murano. The 1970s and 1980s were productive and creative years for Nason as the sole and independent designer at Mazzega Murano. His prolific career has also seen him design for other lighting manufacturers like I TRE, Murano Due and Kalmar.

After a mere four years as a glassmaker, Carlo Nason had his creations displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. The credit for the artisan’s pieces that were included in “Glass 1959” went to his family’s company, but the designs were all authored by Carlo.

Stepping away from the traditional, vibrant Murano stylings, Nason kept true to his inspiration, working with modern and simple forms that are relatively free of color. Nason told Palainco in a rare 2019 interview that his emotions inspired the shapes. And his legacy includes fixtures that are irreplicable and unreproducible, too — Nason made lighting pieces with multiple layers of glass that would be too costly or difficult to recreate today, and some designs were made with processes and materials now unavailable or banned in the glassmaking world.
