About the Item
Lovingly handcrafted by Amitābha Studio from a vintage earthenware vase made by Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) in Gouda, the Netherlands, this Gouda pottery table lamp—model 5057 in décor Vulca—is a striking expression of Dutch mid-century design. The vase was meticulously hand-painted by artist J.G.P. Belt, whose initial “B” appears beneath the factory’s Lazarus-gate mark, and still retains its original retailer label from Fa. W.A. van Leeuwen – Kristal en Luxe Magazijn – Delft, underscoring its provenance and cultural heritage.
Decorated in soft blush pink with bold stylized flame motifs in black and vivid turquoise-green, Vulca exemplifies the dynamic artistry that made Gouda pottery internationally admired. The décor’s name—likely referencing Vulcan, the Roman god of fire—captures the elemental energy of creation through heat and craftsmanship. Its rhythmic, abstract pattern reflects PZH’s transition from traditional florals to the modernist expressions of the 1930s–1960s, bridging Art Deco exuberance and mid-century restraint.
We’ve paired the base with a custom linen lampshade in blush pink, trimmed with Houlès passementerie. The shade creates a warm, diffused glow that highlights the vase’s rich glaze and sculptural form.
Vulca offers an elegant statement of heritage and contemporary refinement—an enduring example of Dutch ceramic artistry reimagined for modern interiors.
About Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH)
Founded in Gouda in 1898, Koninklijke Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland quickly became one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated ceramic producers. Known for its richly glazed plateel earthenware, the factory evolved from the floral Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles of the early 20th century into refined, modernist designs by the 1930s–1960s. Every piece was hand-painted by master decorators, identifiable by their initials beneath the factory’s Lazarus-gate emblem. Today, PZH ceramics are prized for their artistry, color innovation, and reflection of Dutch decorative heritage.

Blue Neoclassical Ceramic Table Lamp, William Morris Acanthus Pleated Shade
By Flora Gouda, Morris & Co.
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
This vintage ceramic table lamp was handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from a rare amphora-shaped vase by Flora Gouda, part of the Porcelina series produced between 1950 and 1970. We’ve paired the base with a bespoke hand-pleated lampshade in a reinterpreted William Morris Acanthus print, and finished it with a soft blue silk cord. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way.
The amphora form, with its fluted pedestal and graceful curves, reflects a neoclassical influence filtered through the clean, modernist lines of mid-century Dutch design. Finished in a pale, slate-toned matte glaze, the vase belongs to Flora’s Porcelina series—developed to meet shifting postwar tastes toward muted, architectural ceramics. Its powdery surface diffuses light gently, lending the lamp a quiet, sculptural quality.
The lampshade’s pleated craftsmanship echoes the vase’s ribbed detailing, while the indigo and ivory palette of the William Morris textile subtly mirrors the vase’s color story. Together, the lamp and shade create a thoughtful dialogue between classical reference and 20th-century restraint.
