Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass Sumac B2322 Yamagiwa Wall Light Lantern 1902-1994. Wall version of Frank Lloyd Wright 'S2300’ Sumac brass table lamp lantern box lantern 1902 / 1907 / 1994 ( also known as the "Sumac" lamp). Extremely rare piece, authorized by FLW Foundation, limited production, numbered. Panels of Iridized glass with substantial brass frame. The Dana-Thomas Sumac House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902-1904 for Susan Lawrence Dana, a forward-thinking socialite living in Springfield, Illinois. It contains the largest collection of site-specific, original Wright art glass and furniture. Wright’s first “blank check” commission, the home has 35 rooms in the 12,000 square feet of living space which includes 3 main levels and 16 varying levels in all. Beyond the essence of an architectural masterpiece of international significance, the house is a brilliant showcase of craftsmanship in iridized glass doors, windows and light fixtures, terra cotta sculpture and an exquisite mural. In an 1907 Chicago Architectural Club exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, Wright presented 38 projects representing the pinnacle of his Prairie-period work. Dozens of drawings were displayed both framed and unframed. Models representing Unity Temple (Oak Park, Illinois, 1905-1908), the Larkin Company Administration Building (Buffalo, 1903-1906), and Lincoln Center (an unrealized project) were presented on pedestals. Photographs were scattered on a table to be perused at the visitor’s leisure. Several pieces of pottery that Wright had designed for Teco Pottery were also displayed. Wright livened up the gallery with touches of color and sparkle by including at least three windows: two “Sumac” windows (recently rediscovered and sold at Sotheby’s Dec 2017 auction for nearly 450,000 USD each, see last image) designed for the Susan Lawrence Dana House and his famous “Tree of Life” window designed for the Darwin D. Martin House. Wright also displayed two lamps designed for the Dana House, a single-pedestal table lamp and one of the box-shaped lanterns for the Reception Room fountain. The wall light / sconce available here is the from the sole (and limited) production run, authorized by the FLW Foundation and undertaken by the prestigious Yamagiwa company, of this box lantern with iridized glass. This piece is based on the box lantern that was displayed in the 1907 exhibition. Wright designed this lantern between 1902-1904, at least three years prior to the aforementioned exhibition.

Without question the greatest architect the United States has ever produced, Frank Lloyd Wright and his philosophy of “organic architecture” — of buildings that exist in harmony with their natural surroundings — had a profound influence on the shape of modern life. Wright gave us some of the most elegant and iconic buildings in America: residences such as Fallingwater, in rural Pennsylvania, the Robie House in Chicago, and Taliesin, Wright’s own home; and masterful institutional structures that include the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois, the Johnson Wax headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Whenever possible, Wright designed the furniture for his projects, to ensure an affinity between a building’s exterior and interior.

Wright’s wooden chairs and tables for his “Prairie Houses” of the early 1900s have sleek, attenuated forms, influenced by both the simplicity of traditional Japanese design and the work of Gustav Stickley and other designers of the Arts and Crafts movement. For Taliesin and several residential projects, Wright designed severely geometric chairs that are marvels of reductivist design. He revisited many of these forms in the 1950s in furniture licensed to the firm Henredon, adding a decorative frieze-like element to the edges of tables and stools.

The works on 1stDibs also show how happily Wright embraced new forms and materials. His desks and chairs for Johnson Wax have a streamlined look and use tubular steel to the same effect as designer Warren McArthur, who collaborated with Wright in the interiors of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. For the Price Tower (1956) in Oklahoma, Wright designed angular wooden desks as well as upholstered pedestal chairs made of chromed steel — audacious furniture for his tallest completed building project.

The beauty of Frank Lloyd Wright’s furniture designs is that while many of us wish we could live in one of his houses, his vintage sofas, storage cabinets and armchairs connect us directly to his architecture, and to the history he made.
