Important Werner Epstein Lamp, Signed, Exhibited Salon Des Artistes, Paris, 1972

Here we have an example of the very rare and famous light sculpture by Werner Epstein. It was edited in a very small edition by Inter Neo, France in 1970. It is both beautiful in its form and in its lighting effect. Words and static photos do not do this stunning piece justice. This large impressive scale lamp features coiled aluminum spirals which are hung onto a needle pin connected to the top of the central vertical supporting rod which catch the rising thermal currents generated by the heat of the standard incandescent light bulb hidden in the base , these rising heat thermals causes the spiral to slowly rotate, as the light catches the slowly rotating spiral a beautiful organic and otherworldly direct and indirect lighting effect is created on the walls, floor and ceiling . Please see images 6 and 7 for an idea of the effect created. This design was exhibited at the 1972 'Salon des Artistes et Decorateurs' held at the Grand Palais des champs Elysees in Paris, and is published in the original exhibition catalogue. Please see scan from exhibition catalogue. PLEASE SEE IMAGE 2 This is one of the most famous ,beautiful and rare of French lighting designs of the 1960s and early 1970s period comparable in rarity with Jacques Ribeyre's and Ben Swilden's iconic lamp designs. This lamp is very seldom seen on the market and from its obvious beauty I can see why. The lamp is a true collectors piece and comes from a private collection , it is fully signed with an impressed dated manufacturer's mark on the underside of the wooden portion of the base and even comes complete with its original box and packing materials. The lamp is in lovely condition, it appears that it has not been used very often as the spiral is still tightly coiled when hung and has not yet become stretched and elongated as you see on some examples due to the effects of gravity over time. The spiral form coils flat and the three part main central vertical supporting stem can be dismantled into three shorter sections for compact and cheap shipping in the original small box, please see photos.. Literature: Original 1972 exhibition catalogue , 47th Salon de la Societe des artistes Decorateurs , 18 February - 12 March 1972, unpaginated, Grand palais des champs elysees, Paris. Please see image 2.
