Pair of Artemide "Tizio" Lamps by Richard Sapper

About the Item

Designed by Richard Sapper for Artemide in 1972, the Tizio lamp is a true classic of modern design. Built with two counterweights to allow the user to direct the light where it’s needed, the lamp adjusts with a pull or push and stays in place without having to tighten a knob or adjust a fastener. The wiring is housed in the arms to create the clean, simple look of Tizio that screams 1980s. Highly concentrated halogen bulb. .Winner of the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award in 1979, the Tizio is included in MoMA’s permanent collection. Prize Grand Prix Triennale XV 1974 Gold Medal Triennale XV 1974 Gold Medal at Bio 9 Ljubljana 1981 Selection Compasso d'Oro 1979 Three position switch allows for two levels of light intensity. Design changes were made to the head in the nineties – a glass cover was added, a thin, wire handle was added to tilt the head since it tends to be hot to the touch. One lamp reflects these changes. The other is an earlier model. When extended vertically, stands 47” tall. When extended horizontally, it is 31” wide. Base diameter is 4.5”.

  • Richard Sapper ‘Tizio’ Table Lamp Artemide, Italy, 1972
    By Artemide, Richard Sapper
    Located in London, GB
Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. It has become “an icon of high-tech design”, according to the MoMA where an example exhibited, and had its heyday as the lamp of choice for the design-conscious bright young things...

Tizio lamp by Richard Sapper for the Italian publisher Artemide. He created this lamp in 1972, revolutionary for its time as the first lamp to use a halogen bulb, but also for its system of counterweights that perfectly balance the structure, allowing the user to position the light precisely on the desired area with a simple gesture of the hand. Selected in 1979 for the Compasso d'Oro, it was later incorporated into the MoMa's permanent collection. Still in production today, it now comes in three models: Tizio, Tizio micro...
