About the Item

These rare Avant Garde lamps were produced in very small numbers in both chromed or black enameled coil sprung steel and exemplify the creativity in design during the Classic Italian radical avant garde design period 1965-1973. This rare design was published in an article 'light as architecture' in the prestigious design magazine 'CASA VOGUE' in January 1973. Please see Image 2. A prominent feature of Italian design and lighting during this period was to encourage user involvement with the design, hence the flexible nature of the coil sprung form allows the user to create a multitude of serpentine forms which also relates to increased possibilities in the forms of light reflection and shadow forms created. A pair of these lamps further increases these possibilities and also allows for the intertwining of both lamps to create ever more complex forms and lighting effects. This rare design was published in Fulvio Ferrari's bible on italian lighting which documents this super creative period is also published in Casa Vogue in January 1973 (chrome version), please see image 3. The "blacky" lamp uses a half silvered 60W incandescent bulb to reflect the light back onto the black polyurethane and aluminum disc to produce a soft delicate radiant lighting effect. These lovely examples still retains their original electrics including the spiral form electrical lead. A rare and imaginative italian Minimalist Classic in excellent all original condition.
