Textured Glass Lamp by Helena Tynell, 1968

About the Item

A mould-blown glass table lamp designed by Helena Tynell for Luxus, Sweden, 1968. Tynell is best known as a designer of decorative glassware for Riihimäki Glassworks, Finland, who she collaborated with from 1946 until 1976. Her work for Riihimäki in the early 1960’s was most closely aligned with art objects. However, the mutually rewarding collaboration Tynell had with BEGA, a German lamp manufacturer, resulted in an increased enthusiasm in design for large scale production. This change can be seen in her designs for Riihimäki from 1964 onwards, when she focussed on mould-blown vases for everyday use. Her work from this period, characterised by cheerful and tactile designs with texture or relief patterns, are that which are most recognisable, enduring, and collected. The table lamp available at Sigmar sits firmly in this body of work. Over-three-quarters of the body of the large cylindrical lamp features a geometric, Op art inspired, relief pattern. This is accentuated by the fact that the lamp is cased glass -ocre coloured glass covered by clear glass. The layer of clear glass captures the light emitted by the bulb at the tip/cap of the domes which surround the lamp and largely inform the pattern of the moulded design. Contrasting the warmth of the lamp base is a navy coloured cotton shade. The newly fitted wiring is an antique-brown coloured braided flex. The plug and in-line switch are black. Specifications: Height including shade: 78 cm Base Diameter: 13 cm Shade Diameter: 42 cm.
