Tizio Desk Lamp by Richard Sapper for Artemide Italy 1970s

About the Item

Tizio lamp by Richard Sapper for the Italian publisher Artemide. He created this lamp in 1972, revolutionary for its time as the first lamp to use a halogen bulb, but also for its system of counterweights that perfectly balance the structure, allowing the user to position the light precisely on the desired area with a simple gesture of the hand. Selected in 1979 for the Compasso d'Oro, it was later incorporated into the MoMa's permanent collection. Still in production today, it now comes in three models: Tizio, Tizio micro and Tizio plus. Special editions have also been produced, including a model entirely lacquered in the designer's favourite colour, red. The structure consists of a cylindrical base made of propylene ether and polystyrene, containing the transformer. A switch is also located on the base, enabling two different light intensities to be obtained. The light from the transformer is then transmitted through its two aluminium arms. Each arm ends in a cast zinc alloy counterweight to balance the pendulum system. The spacing of the arms is allowed and maintained by chromed steel spacer bars ending in two red moulded thermoplastic insulators. The head, made from die-cast aluminium, is also adjustable and has an anodised aluminium internal reflector. In very good condition, fully serviced by a professional electrician.

  • Richard Sapper ‘Tizio’ Table Lamp Artemide, Italy, 1972
    By Artemide, Richard Sapper
    Located in London, GB
Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. It has become “an icon of high-tech design”, according to the MoMA where an example exhibited, and had its heyday as the lamp of choice for the design-conscious bright young things...
