A pair of most impressive Italian hand carved polychrome painted parcel gilt wooden console tables with stunning original serpentine shaped polished Italian onyx dramatically veined marble tops. Exquisitely hand-crafted in the early 20th century, likely Venetian / originating in the Veneto region of Northern Italy, exceptionally executed in the exuberant ornamental opulence and dramatic theatrical styling that is Late Baroque - Rococo taste. It was known as the Rocaille style and soon spread to other parts of Europe, particularly northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Central Europe and Russia. Italy was a place where the Rococo flourished, both in its early and later phases. Craftsmen in Rome, Milan and Venice all produced lavishly decorated furniture and decorative items. The elaborate sculpted decoration frequently included fleurettes, palmettes, seashells, and acanthus foliage carved in wood.
