Very Rare French Boulle Marquetry Inlay Cheval Mirror
About the Item
An extraordinary Boulle Marquetry inlaid cheval mirror
in the Louis XIV Manner
Constructed from bois noirci and dressed with fire gilded bronze mounts throughout, the surfaces decorated and adorned with tortoise shell and brass marquetry in the technique pioneered by the royal cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle, the plinth base of H-outline with ormolu moulding supporting the lower panel of première partie Boulle marquetry of arabesque design and a central ormolu mascaron flanked with scrolling brackets inlaid with contre-partie Boulle work; the pivoting bevelled mirror with a marquetry border of conforming design, surmounted by a gilt bronze rococo keystone finial with a central female mask, the hinges anchored to tapering marquetry-inlaid columns surmounted by urn finials and each issuing two adjustable candleholders.
