Louis XV Giltwood Mirrored Girandoles
Located in New Orleans, LA
This incredibly rare pair of Louis XV-period giltwood mirrored girandoles capture the grandeur, grace and opulence of the Rococo movement in the decorative arts. Each opulent mirror is exquisitely framed with voluminous flourishes of naturalistic motifs exemplary of the Louis XV era’s organic, deliberately asymmetrical stylings. Holding four candles each, these outstanding mirrored girandoles would have decoratively flanked a room of the period elegantly, illuminating the giltwood lustrously and providing ambient light reflected in the mirrored glass. Mirrors have long played an integral role in decorative design, often serving as focal points of a room. Dating back to the 13th century, the first French looking glasses were very small, yet enormously precious. Because these early mirrors...

Pair of 19th century 'Girandole' Italian mirrored wall sconces Very beautiful brass 19th century Italian mirrored wall sconces in original condition with three arm candles. Bevelled mirrors A girandole from French, in turn from Italian girandola) is an ornamental branched candlestick or light fixture consisting of several lights, often resembling a small chandelier. Girandoles came into use about the second half of the 17th century, and were commonly made and used in pairs. A girandole has always been, comparatively speaking, a luxurious appliance for lighting, and in the great 18th-century period of French house decoration, the famous ciseleurs designed some exceedingly beautiful examples. A great variety of metals have been used for the purpose. Sometimes, as in the case of candlesticks, girandoles have been made in hardwoods. Gilded bronze has been a very frequent medium, but for table use silver is still the favorite material. Girandoles, or lighting devices, have also been attached to looking glasses and furniture. Some popular mirrors, especially the convex style, and some large dressing...

1940s French Rococo Vintage Girandoles

Antique and Vintage Girandoles

A girandole is a specific type of lighting fixture with at least two candleholders, frequently held aloft on ornate branches. While antique and vintage girandoles are popular in contemporary homes, these fixtures emerged in lighting design in the latter half of the 17th century, with the French name having derived from the Italian girandola.

Girandoles became popular additions to luxurious interiors in the 18th and early 19th centuries in Europe, particularly in England and France. They were typically affixed to walls in pairs and made from a variety of materials, including gilded bronze and hardwoods.

Artists created girandoles inspired by eclectic sources such as ruined buildings, Greek columns, waterfalls, animals and more. This gave them a sense of movement and nostalgia. Some girandoles were made as both a candleholder and a mirror to reflect light into a room. Many of these mirrors are convex to further enhance the illumination though others are flat.

There are all kinds of lighting to enhance your home. On 1stDibs, find a modern, sophisticated girandole that updates this heritage and pairs well with any furniture style, or find an antique example that brings the beauty of the past into your space.
