19th Century Renaissance Revival Giltwood Overmantle Mirror

About the Item

A showstopping 19th century Renaissance Revival giltwood and gesso overmantle mirror of incredible proportions. Circa 1850, England This truly spectacular mirror boasts egg and dart gilded gesso to the main frame which sits on two bun feet, the incredible crest with a central figure of a Renaissance Noblewoman adorned in a French Hood, set against a scrolled plaque, to either side flowing acanthus leaves, the crest tipped at each end with Fleur de Lis. There are losses to parts of the crest, and small losses to areas of the gesso on the frame. The original and softly foxed mirror plate and oak backboards are all present. The drama and quality that exudes from this mirror cannot be understated, it is a truly exceptional piece. Provenance: from a large East Sussex Country Estate.
