This stunning antique French mirror was crafted in the distinctive Louis Philippe style, which was popular between 1830 and 1870. While this style is generally known for its simplicity and refined elegance, this particular mirror also features influences from the more ornate Louis XVI and Baroque styles, evident in its richly detailed ornamentation.
The gilded frame, entirely covered in gold leaf, is adorned with an exquisitely designed crest, which immediately draws attention. At the center of the crest sits an intricately carved pomegranate, a symbol of abundance, fertility, and renewal. Below it, delicate grapevines with clusters of grapes gracefully intertwine, representing prosperity and hospitality. On either side of the crest, elegant C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and a tied ribbon further enhance the mirror’s decorative appeal, all elements characteristic of the French Neoclassical style. The lower left and right corners are also adorned with elaborate embellishments, adding to the grandeur of the piece.
This mirror was crafted in southern France around 1870 and underwent a meticulous gilding process. After applying the gold leaf, the surface was polished, giving it a distinctive metallic sheen. In some areas, the red base layer subtly shows through the gold, creating a warm and vibrant tone. Additionally, the frame was patinated, adding depth and dimension to the ornamentation.
